Could Icelandic Red Algae for Joint Pain Relief be the next popular health supplement to find its way into our kitchen cupboards? This is something I’ve been recently looking into.
Mostly, because of what this type of seaweed can apparently do for pains in the knees, ankles, wrists, elbows, back and neck.
So most people will be familiar with some of the other supplements for joint pain. For instance, Glucosamine / Chondroitin, DMSO and Turmeric are quite popular treatments. All of these I have looked at in previous posts, but how does Icelandic Red Algae compare?
It’s a good question and perhaps one good reason for this is simply the fact that Iceland is one of the healthiest countries in the world {R].
Something that is well known amongst many people. Even outsiders to this country have heard about the mineral-rich volcanic soil and the superior benefits of things like Icelandic Vegetables and Fish.
Why? It can only be surmised by the incredible health effects such things have had on people that have visited the country. Plus the observations of the Icelandic people that are said to rank as the 3rd most healthy nation in the world. [R]
Which, is exactly what I will be delving into today. How all this is related to Icelandic Red Algae for Inflammation and Pain Relief. Can this strange underwater plant really make the difference for insufferable joint pain?
This is certainly quite a fascinating topic and one that definitely warrants further investigation.
So without further ado let’s begin with looking at what this remarkable underwater plant can really do…
Icelandic Red Algae For Joint Pain Relief – What You Should Know…
So what should be clear to many people is that Joint Pain and especially arthritis is a very common health issue. It is said that around 350 million people globally and as many as 1 in every 4 in the USA have some form of arthritis or Inflammatory Joint Pain. [R]
Inflammation is the most common cause of Joint pain – an effect usually caused by the body’s natural immune response.
Bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles and cartilage can all be affected by inflammation.
So, finding a means of bringing this condition under control is very often the main solution for the treatment of joint pain.
This is because once affected by Inflammation this can attack the joints and surrounding areas. Protective tissue that surrounds the joints can as a result becomes damaged – which can then lead to infection, swelling and further problems.
…Which, brings us to Icelandic Red Algae as a possible treatment – SKIP AHEAD to see my top recommended product [HERE]
So, What Is Icelandic Red Algae for Joint Pain?
Red algae (Rhodophyta) are the most common type of benthic algae found in the Icelandic Sea. They are often not large or conspicuous and belong to a very distinct, primitive group found almost exclusively in the ocean connected to the Icelandic Seas.
Now, the main benefits of Icelandic red algae are its ability to help treat several different health conditions –
examples include; poor circulation, low (or high) blood sugar levels and also fighting back against bad cholesterol – amongst many other things – which of course includes Joint pain relief.
This largely can be attributed to the high Iodine content found in all types of Seaweed. Something which is known for its positive effect on the Thyroid gland and hormones. Very important for how the body metabolizes energy but definitely Icelandic Red Algae is on another level here.
Much because of the abundance of minerals this plant absorbs from the Icelandic Seawater. Indeed, something like 70+ different Trace Minerals can be found contained within the structure of Icelandic Red Algae.
Certainly incredible compared to other underwater vegetation which is nowhere near as nutrient-rich – which brings us to the next question…
What Does Red Algae Do for your Body?
Some things I’ve mentioned above already but perhaps one key thing to note is the high levels of antioxidants found inside this plant.
These include polyphenols, vitamins and polyunsaturated fatty acid contents. Plus also Inside Icelandic Red Sea Algae, the non-protein amino acids are known for many different health benefits.
These are not limited to;
- Lowering Unhealthy Cholesterol Levels,
- Improving Skin Health,
- Thyroid Function,
- Balancing Blood Sugar Levels,
- Better Gut Health,
- Strengthening the Immune System.
And of course, as the title of this article suggests – Icelandic Red Algae is also a remedy for chronic joint pain.
Something which I will certainly be looking into a lot more throughout the course of this blog post.
In fact, keep on reading through the next section where I will be looking into this in a bit more detail… So…
Can Icelandic Red Algae Help With Joint Pain?
This is surely the main point to discuss here, and the answer certainly appears to be yes.
As some data suggests the trace minerals derived from Icelandic red algae may be used to prevent progressive bone mineral loss in conjunction with the added supplementation of calcium.
What some of these studies have concluded is that Calcium from Iceland’s Red Algae (Lithothamnion Calcareum) provides a combination of bioactive calcium, and magnesium as well as 72 other beneficial trace minerals.
Which are thought to be easily absorbed because of the calcified structure of Iceland’s native red algae.
Although, It must be noted that as healthy as Iceland’s native seaweed is, another very big factor for Calcium working is Vitamin D. This is what the body needs to absorb calcium into the bloodstream effectively.
If you don’t get enough Vitamin D (which apparently a lot of the population worldwide DO NOT) then this can affect bone health because of calcium insufficiency.
So Vitamin D our bodies absorb usually from sunlight but we can also get it from some food sources in small amounts. We need to definitely consider this but also we need Calcium to maintain bone density and actually, the plant-based Calcium inside Icelandic Red Algae is some of the best out there you will find.
In fact, plant-based Calcium has many advantages over non-vegan sources. Mostly, because it is said that calcium that is not plant-based contains animal proteins which actually leach calcium from the bones {R].
Kind of worrisome but this is why supplementing with Icelandic Red Algae Calcium may be a good solution for joint pain relief –
Mostly because besides everything else it is a very rich source of beneficial calcium.
Exactly what your joints need for faster recovery and for added protection against things like inflammation and Joint pain.
But Why should you choose Icelandic Red Algae over other more conventional Joint Pain Supplements?
I will explore this in more detail below;
Icelandic Red Algae Vs. Glucosamine
According to one study by the Minnesota Applied Research Center, 50 participants with moderate to severe joint pain were given Icelandic Red Algae to see if it could help reduce pain and stiffness whilst also improving their joint flexibility.
As part of these studies, It was also decided to take this opportunity to try and determine the effects of Icelandic Red Algae for Joint Pain Relief over the far more popular supplements containing Glucosamine –
Now, people that take supplements for joint pain relief will take either Glucosamine HCL or Sulphate alongside another chemical called Chondroitin. These are chemicals we actually produce naturally and they are essential for maintaining the health of cartilage which is of course the rubbery tissue that helps to cushion our joints.
In a lot of the marketing, it is said that these chemicals in their synthetic form can help rebuild and repair cartilage. Yet, in the same breath, nothing beats the real thing – so this does seem to be a good point for research.
Especially given that results from these trials (apparently) found that Icelandic Red Algae actually outperformed Glucosamine amongst these volunteers. It does kind of support the idea of better nutrition being key to the body getting to work by its own means. There are plenty of people with healthy joints that don’t use Glucosamine supplements so this does seem like this could be something interesting to explore,
But what about other supplements – such as…
Icelandic Red Algae Vs. Organic Turmeric
Turmeric is a popular Indian Spice with quite a reputation for its use in Ayurvedic traditions. It’s a great accompaniment to a lot of dishes but besides this, there is evidence to support that Curcumin found inside this root is an anti-inflammatory. Many supplements are marketed that use Curcumin (usually alongside Piperine as its bioactive component) for this reason.
However, it is argued that again like Icelandic Red Algae – Curcumin works best with a source of Vitamin D3 for absorption. Fermentation is another means of helping to absorb Curcumin to its full potential.
By comparison, it does seem like what’s inside Curcumin is another very viable solution to Joint Pain relief. It is certainly great for clearing up Inflammation – perhaps taking both together could be a good idea – but what sticks out with Icelandic Red Algae is its ability to not only help relieve inflammation but actually strengthen the bones.
I mean I would it’s a trial and error thing to see what works best for the individual but to me, I think Red Algae Calcium tackles the underlying issue more. Although I do wonder if organic Turmeric could be more effective for actually relieving Inflammation.
Icelandic Red Algae Vs. CBD
Another popular treatment for Joint Pain relief that has become very popular in recent years is of course CBD. Many since CBD‘s surge in popularity have commented positively on its effect on relieving joint pain. It does seem to be a worthwhile solution. Although saying this CBD seems to work mostly by blocking Pain Signals. It can definitely be great for just allowing your joint health issues to resolve over time.
However, when we compare it to Red Algae Calcium it doesn’t seem to have the same nutritional benefits. It could be something like Turmeric to take alongside a Red Algae Supplement but whether this is really necessary is the question.
I like CBD and have covered a few different products in my reviews now but Red Algae I think looks very interesting as well. So…

What Is GenF20 Red Algae Calcium?
To be clear the GenF20 Red Algae Calcium supplement is actually a formula that consists of several different nutrients.
These of course include Icelandic Red Algae Calcium and a form of Vitamin D3 (which I will discuss more below) but just to be clear about this product. One thing that makes this different from your standard Calcium supplements is the type of Calcium that is found in Icelandic Red Algae.
This is not like the usual Calcium that comes from milk and other dairy food sources. The calcium extracted from Icelandic Red Algae is a plant-based form that is a lot easier for the body to break down and absorb.
Something that is a HUGE problem as we begin to age. Because we generally have more difficulty absorbing nutrients such as vitamins and minerals – especially calcium this means are bones can become a lot weaker.
By resolving this issue can definitely help to resolve existing pain and can also prevent further problems from happening due to brittle bones from low bone mineral density (BMD).
Although, Icelandic Red Algae Calcium as mentioned is not the only ingredient – here is what else you will get;
i.) Red Algae Magnesium
Many people will have been told, that Calcium deficiency is one of the main causes of poor bone health. However, what they might not tell you is that besides Calcium another cause is often associated with low levels of magnesium?
It’s true. There are many important reasons why we need adequate levels of magnesium in our bodies.
In fact, one of these reasons is bone mineral density (BMD). This is essential for reducing the risk of bone fractures.
Incredibly, what most people will not know is that magnesium is a component of bone. Some 60% of the magnesium stored in the human body is found inside our bones.
Plus what’s more, science shows that magnesium is involved with the activity of bone-building cells. It also helps regulate the levels of other minerals including Calcium. Making this another very important ingredient for the treatment of Joint pain.
Very much like these next two…
ii.) Vitamin D3
Most people don’t realize that Vitamin D is a hormone our bodies make, but it’s also an important nutrient for building and maintaining healthy bones. This is because Vitamin D amongst other things is essential for absorbing Calcium. It is also found to help reduce inflammation. [R]
However, what is truly shocking is the figure of around 1/8 of the world’s population don’t get enough Vitamin D. [R] This is, surely because of people not getting outside enough. Sunlight is key to the body producing Vitamin D and the body can only produce it in small amounts without it. Exactly why supplements for Vitamin D can be so beneficial.
But likewise another very important nutrient the body needs for bone health is…
iii.) Vitamin K2
Vitamin K and actually more specifically Vitamin K2 is another very important nutrient for bone health. In hindsight, it is known to optimize Calcium use in the body and is essential for building stronger bones and reducing painful inflammation in your joints. [R]
You can usually find Vitamin K through leafy green vegetables including spinach, kale and broccoli, but actually, Inside GenF20 Red Algae Calcium a patented type of Vitamin K2 is used called MK7.
Clinical studies have shown that MK7 may help increase bone mineral content, bone mineral density and overall bone strength. [R]
iv.) Citrus Bioflavonoids
One very beneficial nutrient to help reduce swelling and reduce pain in inflamed joints is incredibly Vitamin C.
For this purpose Citrus flavonoids which are found in fruits like oranges, lemons and grapefruits are also added to the GenF20 Joint Pain relief formula.
This is a no-brainer in many ways because citrus fruits have been used to help people with weak bones and problematic joint inflammation for centuries.
Anybody that suffers from stiff, aching joints, who wants to rebuild healthy cartilage for “like-new” joints should consider some form of Vitamin C supplementation and this is just one benefit of the GenF20 Red Algae formula.
v.) Organic Fruit and Veg Blend
On top of everything else found in Icelandic Red Algae Calcium here are the EXTRA, powerful bone and joint-supporting nutrients that are added to help top this formula off.
- Organic Strawberry
- Organic Raspberry
- Organic Blueberry
- Organic Cherry
- Organic Tomato
- Organic Carrot
- Organic Spinach
- Organic Kale
Each of the above has been clinically studied to help reduce inflammation and stimulate the growth of new cartilage.
Plus, not only this but each ingredient above is jam-packed with bioactive compounds and minerals that are carefully chosen for building stronger bones.
One of the many claims that GenF20 make regarding this product and its effectiveness. Keep on reading to find out more below…
So What Claims Does GenF20 Make?
GenF20 is a branch of a company called Leading Edge Health – a Canadian-based company that has been around for around 20 years that produce several different types of health products including supplements and skincare products.
The Icelandic Red Algae Calcium Supplement is one that definitely got my attention after first hearing about it. I’d heard about companies selling nutritional supplements and even Icelandic water because of the minerals before. Apparently, Volcanic activity is what is responsible for all the extra nutrients.
But yes GenF20 make many bold claims about this product. They say most prominently that Red Algae Calcium is 100% Natural and can begin working within the first 2 weeks.
They also state that this product can help improve cartilage health, build stronger bones, decrease inflammation and increase range of motion (ROM) and joint flexibility.
And this is NOT all… GenF20 also say that Red Algae Calcium is better than other Calcium Supplements, it is 100% plant-based and is able to fully provide everything the body needs to better joint health in all the right doses.
But Does Red Algae Calcium Really Work?
Well, this is the thing if you check out their website redalgaecalcium.com the information is very convincing. I would say I’ve definitely seen a lot worse products than Red Algae Calcium but as I generally don’t suffer from joint pain I can’t really give away too much with respect to my own experience.
Although, what I can say is that Leading Edge Health the company behind the Calcium Red Algae Supplement are BBB accredited, and TrustPilot verified with plenty of positive reviews for their different products.
It is kind of a difficult one as there isn’t much in terms of reviews for this product at the moment. As far as I can see this hasn’t been available for sale for very long. This does not really help the cause but then there is one thing that does.
Coming from a company with a reputation like that of Leading Edge Health you would expect they would like to maintain their excellent reputation by continuing to supply the best products. I would be willing to take a chance on this but STILL, really is this the best joint health supplement you will find online? I do wonder…
Is GenF20 Red Algae LEGIT?
Seriously, I think I’ve answered this above that Leading Edge Health is a company that you can trust. There are plenty of positive reviews for their different products. Not really for Icelandic Red Algae Calcium (as of now) but they are a company that has been around for a good number of years I would say they are LEGIT.
However, I do think maybe that claims such as this product being able to work in just 2 weeks and that this supplement is better than any other Calcium supplement on the market I don’t think this is completely true.
They also DO NOT make much of an effort to disclose that the Vitamin D3 used in this product is from Cholecalciferol – a substance that is made from Lanolin which comes from Sheep wool.
I mean it could be a lot better than many others sure but this is one thing that is maybe a bit suspect. Although, I will say it is a dog-eat-dog world out there and the only way any company selling health supplements can really survive is to make their products stand out from the rest.
I think GenF20 and Leading Edge Health do a fantastic job of this but with that being said…
How Does Red Algae Calcium Compare?
Really I like the look and sound of GenF20 Icelandic Red Algae Calcium but I’ve looked at a number of supplements for Joint Pain and Inflammation relief now. I actually thought Organixx Turmeric3D was one that could really help people.
This is an Organic Turmeric and Ginger Supplement with Vitamin D that claims to bring down Inflammation and remedy joint pain through its highly effective and absorbable ingredients. It is definitely something else to consider other than Red Algae Calcium. It offers one whole year money back guarantee as well but it doesn’t contain Calcium or Magnesium.
It is more of a detox supplement but definitely, it is a good one to look at.
Read (Related Post): Organixx Turmeric3D Review (2022)
Also, ONE other product I think that looks like a good one for Pain Relief is Dr Sam Robbins HFL Inflame and Pain Relief.
This does not contain Red Algae Seaweed but rather alongside Turmeric, Ginger a handful of other ingredients including Astrallagus and Japanese Knotweed. It also offers a 1-Year Money back guarantee and has over 650 reviews on its website. I would personally recommend this instead but then it is not really the same.
It doesn’t contain Calcium, Magnesium, Vitamin K or Vitamin D but it does contain several other patented ingredients
I will let you decide what is better by checking out [THIS LINK]
Let me know what you think in the comments section below;
Is Red Algae Calcium Safe?
Apparently YES. GenF20 Red Algae Calcium is free of allergy-causing substances and has no reported side effects. According to the Red Algae Calcium website, this supplement is 100% natural and safe.
What Are The Pros?
It’s still early days really but there is definitely plenty of research that shows Aquamin Icelandic Red Algae to be a very powerful nutrient-rich plant. [R] Most definitely it does appear that ingredients such as plant-based calcium and magnesium alongside Vitamin D & K can be used to help support stronger bone health.
It is too worth noting that Leading Edge Health which produces the GenF20 Red Algae Formula have a fairly good reputation based on other products they have released.
You also get something quite different with this product compared to others. If I was to personally put this up against other products I’ve reviewed for joint pain and inflammation I would say this has more of a focus on building stronger bones and joints long term rather than other products that may only just offer a short-term means of relief.
The Cons
There are a few issues that I have personally identified with this product. I’ve seen worse in my time (no doubt) but still, there are some things about this product that should be noted;
- Lack of reviews (perhaps this will change in future but as of now this can be considered a problem).
- As this shipment uses Cholecalciferol for its Vitamin D3 this is not vegan friendly
- The return policy is only 67 Days – some other products offer a whole year.
- The ingredients label is not shared on the Red Algae Calcium website.
Not the worst things really. There are reviews for other products by this brand which is one thing – the sheep wool/vegan issue is mostly only an issue to vegans which not everyone is and the return policy – I do respect there is an actual extra week to receive the product. I think 60 days to test this product out is still plenty really.
Also, I am sure I could message Leading Edge Health to get this label from them.
It is really just what the actual capsules are made from which I’d like to know. The ingredients I shared already but here is the full list…

In Summary
If you are someone that suffers regularly from aches and pains related to issues with your joints then finding a worthwhile solution is surely very important. Going to the doctors and asking for painkillers might seem like a good idea at the time. Especially if it is a chronic pain condition but really this should not be the answer.
I know It might seem like I am saying this for my own benefit (whilst I am at the same time sharing links to various different pain relief supplements) but here is the thing – by getting the right nutrients your body needs you are doing a lot more than just blocking out the pain. You are actually resolving the cause of pain.
So Red Algae Calcium is an interesting one – actually because Calcium itself can be responsible for joint pain. This is because when it is not absorbed this can build up around the joint tissue and cartilage.
Except Calcium is essential for building strong bones. We need Calcium but it is important that we absorb this mineral at the same time. This is where plant-based Calcium really does the trick.
Red Algae Calcium is designed to absorb more Calcium than other standard supplements and the plant-based Magnesium in this supplement has its own role to play by helping to distribute this Calcium in the right way.
Other joint pain products are of course different but it does look like this could be a special one for anyone looking to build stronger bones and find relief for inflammation and swelling.

Final Word
Underwater plants such as Icelandic Red Algae and Irish Sea Moss for example really are the stuff of legends. Countless natives to these lands have used these natural sources for treating a whole range of health conditions for many hundreds of years. It is no surprise that products made from these ingredients are now on the online market.
Whether these supplements really contain what they say they do is another story. Although there are many dietary supplements that are worth the money.
Especially those that can supply important minerals such as Calcium and Magnesium.
I am definitely convinced but how about you. Have you tried any good dietary supplements for Joint pain? Let us know in the comments below.
Many thanks for reading #StayDynamic

Hi Alex,
This review of Icelandic red algae is very in-depth and answers a lot of “need to know questions”. Thank you! Iceland is well known to be one of the healthiest countries in the world possibly because of its mineral-rich volcanic soil and fish, I am quite interested in learning other reasons for the healthy lives of its people.
The GenF20 Red Algae Calcium supplement consists of several already well known nutrients. The uniqueness of this product seems to be the Icelandic Red Algae Calcium and a form of Vitamin D3. The calcium is a plant-based form that is much easier for the body to break down and absorb. This is important because with aging, calcium becomes much more slower and difficult to absorb resulting in brittle bones and possibility of inflammation and fractures from falls. I think that this is an important finding. Increased awareness and use will increase the number of reviews….
Thanks, Ceci
Thanks, Ceci, Think I covered most things in this article. There are maybe one or two more points I think I could look at further regarding this but anyhow yes Iceland is quite a fascinating place. I remember seeing something years ago about how their vegetables were especially nutritious because of the volcanic soil and that this was believed to be why they live such long lives. I mean besides this their mineral-rich sea and water possibly their culture could contribute to better health as well but I never really looked at this when doing this research although I maybe should have.
The GenF20 Red Algae Calcium supplement is an interesting one – its uniqueness I would say is from the PB Calcium and PB Magnesium as well as other trace minerals inside. The type of Vitamin D3 i’m not sure about if it is much different than that found in other supplements but the Vitamin K2 is a patented type so that is interesting. I will need to study this more I think but you are quite right it is important to strengthen your bones to prevent things like fractures and inflammation is not good either.
Hi Alex,
There is a ton of information in this article! I have never heard of Icelandic Red Algae before or its uses and found the information very interesting. I do not have joint pain, but my mother has suffered for years from joint pain and inflammation. If the product works it would really be beneficial. I am also intrigued by your statement that Icelandic people are healthier and that calcium that is plant-based is best. I have to take calcium daily and may have to look into that a bit more.
Thanks for the info,
Chastity
Hi Chastity, Yes I have written a few different articles about joint pain so knew a bit about this prior to this. It’s definitely something I need to continue my research into but anyhow my mother is the same. I want her to try something like this or maybe organic turmeric although I think a lot of her joint pain is down to wear and tear. She would need something I think that can help repair her cartilage and joints as well as relieve inflammation. I am thinking about getting her this but I wonder if she would also need something extra to help relieve any inflammation. Maybe something like Turmeric3D – anyhow yes Plant Based on Calcium I am thinking about trying myself. Drinking cow’s milk all the time although it is a source of Calcium – animal proteins inside can actually leach calcium from the bones also for the gut the casein proteins within milk are very hard to digest (much like gluten) so I wonder about supplementing with PB Calcium and Vitamin D3 for a while so I can give up drinking milk. Just to see how it affects my gut health.
Many people are looking for natural remedies for pain relief, and this looks like a great natural option. It would be good to see how this goes in regards to the studies…
There are many benefits from the diets that Icelandic people follow…
Thanks John yes this might be an idea for updating the article. I definitely shared some sources throughout but yes I see what you mean.
