Of course, supplements are one thing to consider [see my top recommendation here].  Plant extracts including essential oils are also very popular for instance.  However, as I will share throughout this blog post many other natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth exist that can be beneficial in a number of different ways.

Indeed, improving all-around well-being with a healthy diet itself can go a long way in helping to resolve the cause of hair loss.  Eating the right foods is very important and alongside this other nutrient-based topical treatments are also an option.

25 Natural Remedies for Hair Loss and Regrowth

25 natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth

So, now let’s begin, shall we?  For today’s post, I will be exploring various natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth such as whole foods, essential oils, minerals and vitamins etc.

The likes of which have been used by people holistically to treat hair loss and stimulate regrowth for centuries.

The treatments I am about to share can be used in a number of different ways.  Whether this is to help strengthen and thicken your thinning hair, or to regrow hair that you have already lost there are remedies that can all apparently help.

Onion Juice, Biotin, Copper, and Coconut Oil are just a few to mention but by and large, there is quite a list of ideas out there which are quite easily available for you to try.

I will try my best to cover as many of these as I can but of course, if you have any more suggestions I would love to hear from you.  Once you have finished reading, please share your thoughts, feedback and questions in the comments section xx

We would love to hear from you but now let’s keep this moving.

Natural Remedies for Hair Loss Vs. Supplements

natural remedies and supplements for hair loss

Before we begin of course we will begin with a quick question.  Which are better Natural Remedies for Hair Loss or Supplements?  Of course, supplements are great for a wide array of health conditions but really natural remedies should be the clear winner.

The actual plants rather than plant extracts inside readymade blends are what I mean.  You can not always trust plants more in their more natural form.  This is a given I think.

However, some supplements are proven to work and actually, there is no reason why we can’t use both together.

If truth be told yes there are crappy supplements out there but the benefit of finding a good one is that you can get many natural remedies rolled into one.  Which often can supercharge you alongside anything else you already take.

And this is actually true for many health products.

So as a general rule, the main thing to note is whether you are choosing from supplements or natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth make sure the products are of good quality.

Be sure to look for good reviews from previous customers or even try to follow the recipes yourself for the most effective results.  I am not personally qualified as a GP or Nutritionist but according to my research here may be some things to consider.   Also, another quick important thing to mention is some links on this website are my affiliate links.

If you happen to use any of these the price you pay will not be affected but I may receive a commission for sharing the link.

Anyhow, now this is cleared up I shall begin with the first natural remedy below… which is;

i.)  Can Coconut Oil Prevent Hair Loss?

can coconut help stop hair loss

If you suffer from hair thinning coconut oil may be able to help.  According to some sources, coconut oil can slow down hair loss by penetrating deep into the scalp to protect against protein loss.  By maintaining these essential proteins, in effect, this nourishes deep into the hair follicles and simultaneously moisturizes to jumpstart hair regrowth.

Many people ask – Can Coconut Oil Regrow Lost Hair?   As natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth go it is definitely right up there.. “Coconut oil will definitely help your hair grow healthier, thicker, and longer hair.

This is believed to be for a number of reasons but chiefly because the vitamins and fatty acids in coconut oil help nourish your scalp and penetrate the cuticle of the hair.  Something which is very good as it helps the scalp to absorb more nutrients.  One of the key things we will look to explore further through this post.   Now, let’s continue…

ii.)  Castor Oil for Hair Loss Before and After

castor oil for hair loss

Although there is no conclusive proof that castor oil actually works many products online are marketed that claim to help with dry scalp and other scalp problems.  It is also a popular treatment for skin care and actually, there are some very interesting claims about this health product.   Such as that it can help stimulate hair growth at 3 to 5 times the normal rate.

Castor Oil contains an amino acid called ricinoleic acid which is an omega 9 unsaturated fatty acid that is believed to help with hair loss and regrowth in 2 different ways;

  • By decreasing levels of PGD2, which shrinks hair follicles and has been associated with parts of your body that often experience hair loss
  • And by increasing PGE2, an anti-inflammatory that’s thought to make our hair much denser.

If its claims are true Castor Oil is certainly right up there as far as natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth go.  It is thought that as it can reduce inflammation that it can also increase blood flow and stimulate the hair follicles to help grow healthier, shinier hair (R).

iii.)  Is Indian Gooseberry Good for Hair Growth?

gooseberry hair loss

Next on this list of Natural Remedies for Hair Loss and Regrowth is Amla.  Otherwise known as the Indian Gooseberry, which is an edible fruit that is very popular for hair care.

So Amla is thought to treat hair loss and stimulate hair growth in a number of different ways.  It is also said to act as a conditioner that can help with a flaky scalp.

Much is claimed about the different hair health benefits of Amla and it’s kind of understandable considering the antioxidant effects of other berries such as blueberries and blackcurrants.

Except the Indian Gooseberry has quite a reputation regarding hair health.  When applied topically, it is believed that certain vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients present in this plant increase the blood circulation to the scalp.

This of course ensures that the scalp gets all the essential nutrients and oxygen it needs to be healthy.   Subcutaneous blood flow that is triggered by this is what helps in the anagen phase of the hair.  Something which promotes further growth.

Possibly the reason why Amla is as popular as it is, and actually something to try is applying a blend of amla powder with egg white to the roots of the hair.  It might sound odd but this apparently produces the best results.  [R]

iv.)  Is Greek Yogurt Good for Hair Loss

is natural yogurt good for hair loss

Another seemingly odd idea on this list of Natural Remedies for Hair Loss and Regrowth is Greek or Natural Yogurt.  After all putting Yogurt in your hair must sound crazy right?  but it’s true this is actually a thing which people do.

So Greek yoghurt is known to be quite abundant in an ingredient that helps with blood flow to your scalp and hair growth.  You probably have heard of this – It’s called vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid).   This actually is known to prevent hair loss and thinning and for this reason, it is actually very popular for not only hair products but also for skin care.

Does Greek Yogurt Make Your Hair Thicker?

Getting more Natural Yogurt into your diet ups your Vitamin B intake.  Especially Pantothenic Acid which is linked to strong and healthy hair growth. Vitamin D3 is also found inside Greek Yogurt which further helps by improving the health of hair follicles thus allowing the strands of the hair to grow much thicker.

The benefits for the hair and scalp haven’t been proven in clinical research. However, anecdotal evidence and cultural traditions support its use in this manner including something called hair masking.

Proponents of these hair masks suggest that the protein in natural yoghurt promotes strong and healthy hair.  This is believed to be because the lactic acid in yoghurt does a number of things such as cleansing the scalp, clearing away dead skin cells and boosting hair follicle growth.

People that use hair masks can help resolve the damage caused by a number of things including air pollution, sunburn,  toxic hair products and styling tools.  [R]

V.)  Fenugreek Seeds for Hair

does fenugreek prevent hair loss

This Indian Spice is better known for making curries rather than as a home remedy for hair health but quite surprisingly as far as Natural Remedies for Hair Loss and Regrowth go this is actually used to treat dandruff and hair loss.

Fenugreek — or methi — seeds are frequently used as a natural home remedy for thinning hair and other related conditions, such as dandruff or a dry, itchy scalp.

Beauty publications and other popular media sources claim that they’re the secret to growing thick, shiny hair.  [R]

Vi.)  Onion Juice For Hair Health

using onion juice for hair loss and regrowth

So this must sound like a joke.  If somebody told you to juice an onion and pour it over your head you probably wouldn’t take them very seriously but no lie people actually do this.

It sounds crazy I know?  Can you imagine going out and everyone smelling onions off your hair?  It sounds kind of humiliating but actually when considering Natural Remedies for Hair Loss and Regrowth this is surprisingly very popular.

If you watch this video above it points out two things quite quickly – 1# that Onions contain Sulfur, which is very important for waste management and 2# they are also very high in antioxidants.

Whether you want to put onions in your hair I think is the real question but if you don’t no worries please just keep reading for more ideas to try.   Hopefully, you will not be disappointed.   Now…

Vii.)  Chinese Hibiscus For Hair Health

chinese hibuscus for hair regrowth

Next on my list of natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth is the Chinese Hibiscus flower.  Otherwise known as the Shoebackplant and ‘the China rose’ this is a plant found natively in China, India and the Pacific Islands.

In Ayurvedic traditions, Hibiscus is one of the most renowned herbs for promoting hair growth. If you suffer from hair loss, then both the flowers and leaves from the Hibiscus plant will serve as the perfect remedy to prevent losing any more hair.

Although, most recent research has been done on animals such as rats studies suggest that complete recovery from dormant hair follicles and bald patches is possible by using Hibiscus flowers.

It is by its reputation a possible remedy for many hair conditions including dandruff, colour loss, and hair thinning.

VIII.)  Green Tea Vs Coffee For Hair Growth

green tea and coffee for for hair regrowth

In terms of natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth, this is quite a big one.  Detoxing is very beneficial for the human body in many, many different ways and one thing that will often come up in these conversations is green tea.  So when we struggle with our hair health this can be because of toxins in our body.

It is not the only cause but actually detoxing for one is something that green tea and even green coffee can help with.  By eliminating these toxins green tea can help increase the supply of nutrients to the scalp area.

This as a result can improve hair growth but also the epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) compound in green tea further may prevent hair loss by inhibiting the activity of hormones that themselves may induce hair loss.

This process may also help to stimulate the regrowth of hair follicles.  So if you don’t drink green tea this is a good reason to start.  Also, Green Coffee, which is the raw, unroasted form of Coffee is very similar to green tea in a lot of ways.

Green Coffees’ anti-oxidant properties help hair cells fight toxins keeping them healthy, strong and moisturised. The anti-microbial agents of this plant made into oil can help to deep clean the scalp preventing dandruff growth, reducing itchiness and promoting new hair growth.

IX.)  6 Essential Oils For Hair Growth

6 essential oils to help hair regrowth

One thing we really can’t ignore when we talk about natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth is essential oils.

There are many essential oils a person can use to promote better hair health.  You can find many different uses for this type of product but one very good example is special shampoos and conditioners.

The list is quite extensive but just some essential oils for hair loss and regrowth to look out for are;

  • Thyme oil,
  • Rosemary Oil
  • Lavender oil,
  • Jojoba oil,
  • Juniper oil,
  • Geranium oil

Whether one is better than the other is certainly debatable but what isn’t is that essential oils collectively are very good.  For a lot of things but definitely as far as Natural Remedies for Hair Loss and Regrowth go these are 100% right up there.

X.)  How To Use Ginseng For Hair Growth

ginseng for hair health

Another popular Ayurvedic plant that finds its way onto this list of natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth is of course Panax Ginseng.  One of the major bioactive constituents of this popular Asian plant are compounds called ginsenosides. For these, ample evidence suggests these promote hair growth by enhancing the proliferation of dermal papilla.

This in turn helps prevent hair loss via modulation of various cell-signalling pathways.  In fact, the role of the 5α-reductase enzyme present in ginsenosides in the hair-loss process has been well-documented.

Androgen metabolism plays a key role here and novel therapeutic ways for the management of hair loss and alopecia are at play here in how ginseng can improve hair-follicle proliferation and reduce hair loss.. (R)

Xi.) Does Vitamin B Improve Hair?

b vitamins and hair health

Now, when we look at B Vitamins and their relationship with hair health the main role they play really is to do with metabolism.  Basically, they help transform the nutrient content of food to play to increase its value to the body.  Including hair follicles. Which, is actually another point to make.  The loss of hair due to undernourished follicles can be down to deficiencies in B vitamins such as – B1, B2, B3 and B5.

Whereas Vitamin B9 (Folate) deficiency slows down the cell division process meaning follicles are sluggish and produce less hair less quickly.   Also, Vitamin B7 (Biotin) is increasingly popular in dietary supplements thanks to its role in maintaining the strength and healthy texture of hair around the scalp.

The bioavailability, or absorption rate, of biotin, is still being researched – but still its success as a treatment for infant ‘cradle cap’ suggests it could be effective in optimising scalp health.

Plus when we consider B Vitamins on this list of Natural Remedies for Hair Loss and Regrowth another one worth a mention is Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin).  B12 deficiency is often linked to hair loss because it is needed to help metabolize Iron.

Xii.)  Omega-3 and Omega-6 Fatty Acids

omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids for hair health

Fatty acids such as Omega 3, 6 & 9 are all very important to make sure that our body functions normally.  We need these fatty acids for not only our hair but also for our skin, circulatory system, brain and organs.

Although, Omega 3 and 6 are two fatty acids that our human body can’t produce naturally.  We must eat the right foods to make sure that we get these two fatty acids this way as they are important for many things including blood pressure regulation, immune function, skin disorders, hair, diabetes, asthma, osteoporosis, and brain development.

Sources of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids include amongst other dietary options include Fish Oil, Olive Oil, Avocados and Walnuts.  If you are looking to find Natural Remedies for Hair Loss and Regrowth then a diet consisting of these foods as well as supplements such as Cod Liver Oil definitely may be something to consider.

Xiii.)  Trace Minerals and Electrolytes

how trace minerals can help with hair loss and regrowth

When it comes to Natural Remedies for Hair Loss and Regrowth what can not be understated is the importance of trace minerals and electrolytes.  The human body is said to need 11 different trace minerals to properly function.

This is really one of the most fundamental things to know;

Iron, Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium, Zinc, Copper, Selenium, Phosphorus, Silicon, Iodine and Manganese each play a very important role in hair health.  Chromium and Sodium are important in small amounts as well.

So when we start to lose hair or our hair turns grey usually this is to do with nutrition.  Quite simply our body needs both vitamins and minerals.  Deficiency in either can most definitely cause hair loss and giving your body what vitamins and minerals it needs can of course help to reverse this and help with hair regrowth.

In this respect, it is important to eat the right foods but also to make sure the body is absorbing these minerals in the right way.  Sometimes it might be that we are eating right but our body is not absorbing nutrients correctly.

One reason why multivitamins alongside trace minerals may be a good idea to consider.

XIV.)  Saw Palmetto Hair Regrowth Success

can saw palmetto help with hair loss

One plant that is popular in Native American traditions and can be considered an alternative remedy used to treat hair loss is Saw Palmetto.  This is a plant with small berries that has been used as a natural remedy for many health conditions and even for food in tribal groups for centuries.

Research on whether saw palmetto works to treat hair loss is promising but not conclusive.  What some studies have found is the extract from saw palmetto berries may block 5-alpha-reductase.  This is an enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT.  Blocking DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) can help slow down hair loss.  It is also involved in the enlargement of the prostate.

So whilst research has been geared more toward prostate health as this same process involves blocking DHT there is definitely some foundation to support saw palmetto’s role in reversing hair loss.  (R)

XV.)  How To Use Pumpkin Seed Oil for Hair Loss

pumpkin seed oil and hair loss

If you google hair loss prevention one remedy you are quite likely to come across is pumpkin seed oil.  As far as natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth go one significant study about pumpkin seed oil and hair loss was published in 2014.

In the study, men suffering from pattern baldness took either pumpkin seed supplements or a placebo. The results showed those who took pumpkin seed oil experienced 30 percent more hair growth than those that didn’t.

One theory why pumpkin seed oil is believed to work for hair loss is that compounds within pumpkin seeds called phytosterols help to promote hair growth.

Supposedly, phytosterols work to block enzymes and hormones in your scalp that cause hair loss.  Much like Saw Palmetto really as discussed above and actually it is said that both these plants actually work very well together.  (R)

XVI.)  Does Melatonin Affect Hair Growth

how melatonin can help with hair loss and regrowth

So this is not exactly something that really qualifies for this list of natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth.  Melatonin is a hormone naturally produced in the human body so anything like melatonin cream that you can buy is definitely synthetic.

However, It is known based on in vitro testing in the hair organ culture model that the sleep hormone melatonin is able to stimulate growth in human hair follicles.

Much like human skin, human hair follicles are also known to synthesize melatonin and actually, themselves have their own melatonin receptors.  In fact, studies show that human anagen hair follicles cultivated in vitro at a concentration of 30 μM melatonin demonstrate a significantly faster rate of hair follicle growth in comparison to the culture medium alone or even at significantly higher millimole concentrations (1-5 mM).  [R]

XVII.) Aloe Vera Hair Thickening – Does It Work?

aloe vera gel and hair regrowth

Lots of people that use shampoos and hair lotions will have heard of Aloe Vera.  It is a very popular natural treatment for a lot of things. Especially because of its cooling and soothing effect it is used as a remedy for skin rashes and burns.

This is a plant that is found all over the world, and many people grow their own because of how well it works.  Anybody that has used aloe vera gel may be able to tell you that this works wonders for a lot of things but staying on the topic of natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth aloe vera is definitely something to consider.

This is because rubbing aloe vera into your scalp and hair and letting it penetrate your hair follicles can recondition and improve damaged, dry hair.  It is actually found in many hair products for this exact reason.  (R)

XVIII.)  Apple Cider Vinegar for Hair Strength

apple cide vinegar for hair loss

Many will know about apple cider vinegar for its health benefits with many health products on the market that contain this as an ingredient.  Weight loss and lowering blood sugar are notable conditions that ACV is recommended for.  However, you can also use ACV to make a kind of hair wash that helps strengthen hair follicles and can help with dandruff.

One compound found inside apple cider vinegar is acetic acid.  This helps to lower pH and helps to balance out the acidity which can weaken your hair strength.  Also, another benefit of acetic acid is it is antimicrobial which means it can help fight against the bad kind of bacteria that is detrimental to all-around scalp health.

Read More About ACV Here:  Why Is Apple Cider Vinegar Healthy?

XIX.)  Is Liquorice Root Good For Hair Health?

licorice root for hair loss and regrowth

Liquorice Root helps prevent hair loss and further damage to the hair. For starters, It helps to soothe the scalp and get rid of any dry flakes/dandruff.  For this reason and others, Licorice root has been used holistically since the 3rd century BC.

in Egypt for example it is known for its soothing properties for a dry or irritated scalp.  For this, it is extremely effective and if you have scalp irritations like dandruff, itchy scalp or small scabs on the scalp this is definitely something to consider

You can make a paste from Liquorice Root by adding a tablespoon of ground liquorice root and a quarter teaspoon of saffron to one cup of milk.  Apply this to your scalp and hair length then leave it to absorb overnight.

XX.)  Hyaluronic Acid Hair Benefits

hyaluronic acid

Many people that are familiar with skin care products will be familiar with hyaluronic acid.  Again like melatonin, this is a chemical that is naturally produced and thus any product that contains this will contain a synthetic version rather than the actual natural chemical.  So really this does not belong on this list but however still, this is worthy of a mention.

To be clear, hyaluronic acid is not a moisturizer (it’s a humectant). It works by retaining water and drawing moisture to the skin’s surface. This benefits the hair and scalp in several ways.

Hydration is of course the main one.  It works with hair fibres in a very similar way to the skin as it helps to seal and retain moisture.  It also helps to hydrate the scalp allowing collagen to thrive in this area.

Results-wise this really can benefit the hair in so many ways making for shinier, stronger hair that is more resistant to damage.  Our hair actually needs hyaluronic acid so this definitely well placed on this list.

XXI.)  L-Arginine, and L-Citrulline Amino Acids

structure of l-arginine and l-citruline

Of course, many of us would have heard of amino acids before.  These are chemicals that are produced by the activity of enzymes breaking down fats, proteins and carbohydrates. Within the human body, there are many different kinds of amino acids that serve a wide range of different purposes.  You will find a lot of different health products containing amino acids for this very reason but these two above are definitely special.

This is because L-Arginine and L-Citrulline help with blood flow and the regulation of blood cells.  In turn, this helps more nutrients to reach the scalp and hair follicles which can most certainly help with both Hair Loss and Regrowth.

Again like melatonin and hyaluronic acid, if you are looking to try L-Arginine or L-Citruline in supplements these chemicals will also be synthetic. Although, certain foods rich in Nitric Oxide (NO) such as beets, radish and red cabbage can help the body produce these 2 amino acids naturally.

XXII.)  Can Meditation Help With Hair Loss?

can meditation help with hair loss and regrowth

Many might dismiss this as rubbish and it is not exactly scientific fact or anything but still, Meditation is well known for its health benefits including stress relief which actually is often caused by high levels of the hormone cortisol.

Taking care of high cortisol levels can absolutely help with hair loss and regrowth.  This is because although it is necessary for the body to function properly at the same time too much cortisol can disrupt natural bodily functions such as mineral absorption and blood flow.  In fact, any way to manage cortisol levels can help hair regrowth.

Although meditation is not just great for this one thing in the event that your hair doesn’t grow back this is a good practice to help find peace of mind for any self-image issues your hair loss might be causing.

XXIII.)  Yoga and Stretching Exercises

yoga and stretching exercises for hair loss and regrowth

One interesting idea to help increase blood flow, which of course can positively impact hair growth and thickening is exercising.  Even walking can be beneficial here but yoga and stretching exercises are quite interesting here.

In my recent post about pelvic floor exercises, one part I found that was relatable is these exercises can apparently help to release Nitric Oxide which helps to signal blood vessels to relax.  A lot of noise is made about this in regards to erectile dysfunction but actually, as this is related to blood flow this is also related to hair loss and regrowth.

XXIV.)  Positive Affirmations

positive affirmations for hair growth

Above I said that some might believe that meditation being on this list of Natural Remedies for Hair Loss and Regrowth might sound crazy – well this will probably sound even crazier.

This is that training your thoughts to think in a more positive way can effectively stimulate hair growth   I don’t want to give people false hope here you probably should try some of the treatments above as well but I read about this in a book recently about a bald man that obsessively told himself that he could make his hair start growing back.

It sounds like a bit of a joke I know but positive affirmations and manifestation are practised by countless people and often with very surprising results.

This is not really something you can prove.  For one there are far too many variables but think positively about your situation.  Tell yourself not to give up and if you want to grow your hair thicker or even back after you’ve lost it tell yourself you can every day and see what happens as a result.

XXV.)  Lowering Stress Levels

lowering stress for hair regrowth

Well, I have definitely mentioned this already, the effects that stress and cortisol have on the rest of the body.  If anything I have shared above sounds like nonsense to you then this is definitely not.  We need the stress hormone cortisol in the correct amounts as it helps to regulate the metabolism and the body’s stress response.

However, when we get ourselves stressed out the body releases more cortisol which can affect the regulation of other hormones and the absorption of essential minerals.  You can take a supplement for high cortisol (see my review here) but generally speaking, just relaxing, meditating, going for a walk and positive thinking can all help.

Things like work, family and financial affairs are all situations that can trigger stress.  Taking time away from these problems is a good idea and if you find that you are losing hair and you are under a lot of stress this may be something that resolving to some degree might help with actually growing your hair back.

In Conclusion

For anyone struggling with hair loss, this of course can be very demoralising.  For many people, much of the identity they give themselves is because of their hair.   Whether we grow it long, cut it short, dye it another colour or whatever many of us are very sentimental about the hair on our head.  So losing hair can be difficult to comprehend more than we realise.

Getting older is, of course, one thing that can play a very big role in this, as can stress but fortunately, like many other health conditions, there are treatments out there that can help.  Many I have shared in this guide and hopefully, if you are in need of any natural remedies for hair loss and regrowth this blog post will be of some use to you.

So please take some time to give this a read and of course, if you know anyone else that might benefit from the information shared in this post please send them a link so they can take a read of this as well.
