Hello All, today we are going to look at How Music Affects Mental Health. I’m sure it will come as no surprise to you this. That Music is a great way to help with your mental health. You may have seen such things advertised as relaxation music, or soothing, calm music for example but actually I mean all types of music.
Listening to your favorite music is, entertaining, fun and can give the listener a great deal of pleasure. Can you think of a time when a very moving Ballad has come on and made you feel all cuddly and tender? Or you are out with friends and a rock song has started playing and you are dancing to the beat of the drum. Getting your pulse racing and the laughter bubbling up inside of you ready to burst out.
Feels good doesn’t it?
but if you didn’t know…
- Music can act as a stress reliever
- Music can help you to sleep better
- Music is good for depression
- Music is motivational
How Music Affects Mental Health?
Yes, music is therapy. Also, I don’t just mean relaxation music, or meditation music such as binaural beats or anything like that. Just listening to your favorite songs can be a great way to relieve stress. If you suffer from depression music as well evidence suggests can help reduce your symptoms. According to a study taken in 2011 at Cambridge University this is most certainly the case. In fact making music is a great way of unlocking latent desires and withheld emotions.

i.) Music Can Act As A Stress Reliever
Listening to meditative music helps you to relax and feel at peace with yourself. The soothing sounds can be enjoyed in a bubble bath with soft candles to help set the mood. Just lying back in the hot water letting the sounds soothe your stresses away.
Another reason to listen to music is that it might make you feel happier. In a recent survey of the reasons why people listen to music, surveyors discovered that music played an important part in arousal and mood. Participants said the music’s ability to help them achieve a better mood and become more self-aware as two of the most important benefits of music.
2.) Music Helps You To Sleep Better.
Do you suffer from Insomnia? Studies have shown that listening to classical music is a safe, effective, and affordable option, rather than taking over the counter medication. If classical music is not for you, then you can listen to any kind of soft soothing music, the more it relaxes you the easier it will be to get to sleep.
3.) Music To Help With Depression
Researchers have found that music therapy is a safe and effective treatment for a number of disorders, including depression and anxiety.
A study that appeared in the World Journal of Psychiatry found that as well as reducing depression and anxiety in patients suffering from neurological conditions such as dementia, stroke, and Parkinson’s disease, music therapy showed no negative side effects, meaning it is a very safe and low-risk treatment.
Another study found that music can definitely have an effect on your mood, the type of music that is listened to is also very important. Researchers found that classical and meditative music gave the best benefits, listening to heavy metal and techno music can be very detrimental.
4.) Music And Motivation
You have some chores to do around the house, put on some music that makes you want to get up and dance, the music will get your motivational juices flowing allowing you to do the chores in a much happier frame of mind.
If we are happy and motivated we are not concentrating on what is not right in our health and our mind.
How Music Affects Mental Health – My Final Thoughts
A lot of studies have been conducted by Universities around the world on the various benefits of listening to different types of music. The vast majority have found the music to be of great benefit to the listeners with mental health issues.
In another study, it was found that music helps if you are in pain. One study of fibromyalgia patients found that those who listened to music for an hour a day experienced a huge reduction in pain compared to those in the control group.
The type of music listened to was also a very important factor. It was found that certain types of music did have some negative effects.
When you think about how many genres of music are out there to be listened to it gives you lots of scope to find some that works for you.
Did you realize music could be so beneficial to your mental health? I know I certainly didn’t.

Thank you very much for reading and sharing your thoughts.
I must say music has a very strong effect on its listeners, it can either affect you positively or negatively it could even affect your social life….I tell you music is extraordinary, but there one particular effect it has that I am yet to understand and that is it’s effect on mental health as I have seen music set people back in track and also seen it have bad effect on mental health too but how🤔 is the big question.
Hello and thank you for your comments and your question.
Depending on your state of mind and the music you are listening to it can have a detrimental effect. If you are delusional and you listen to a song about destruction it can play havoc with your brain waves with disastrous consequences.
