How Are Veneers Different From Lumineers?

how veneers are different from lumineers

What are Veneers?

what are veneers vs luminners

Veneers are thin coatings of tooth-coloured material that are glued to the front surfaces of teeth to aesthetically enhance your smile. In Medellin, both composite and porcelain are used for the fabrication of veneers.

And, What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are a brand of veneers that are popularly known as “no-prep” veneers and are made of Cerinate® porcelain. They are ultra-thin and are fixed to the front surfaces of the teeth just like veneers.

What Dental Problems Can Be Fixed by Veneers or Lumineers?

When performed by experts, veneers and Lumineers can be used to fix a wide range of dental problems such as-

  • Worn-down teeth
  • Misshaped teeth
  • Teeth that are broken or chipped off
  • Gaps in between teeth
  • Badly discoloured teeth

It is not just the professional training or years of clinical experience, but also the sheer passion that helps our English-speaking dentists in Colombia to transform your smile into the most beautiful one!

But Who Wins – Veneers Vs Lumineers?

    • Thickness- Traditional veneers are approximately 0.5 millimetres thick and they mimic the look and feel of natural teeth. Lumineers, on the other hand, are just 0.3 millimetres thick, almost equal to the width of a regular contact lens.
    • Preparation- Since lumineers are thinner than veneers they hardly need any enamel to be removed. When compared to crowns both veneers and lumineers need very less shaving of tooth structure as only the front surfaces need to be reduced.
    • Reversibility- As Lumineers need no prep to make room for them,  they are considered the most reversible and you can take them off in the future if you prefer not having them. On the other hand, while porcelain veneers are able to be removed, they are done so less seamlessly.
    • Durability- Both veneers and Lumineers are extremely durable and last for a minimum of 15 to 20 years. If taken care of well and with adequate professional help, they may even last up to two decades.
    • Translucency- Lumineers are more translucent than veneers owing to their reduced width. Hence, deep and dark stains on teeth can be concealed completely only with the help of veneers.
    • Prep time- Veneers need at least two appointments. In the first one, the teeth that need to have veneers might be shaved a bit to make space and then an impression will be recorded and sent to the laboratory for fabrication. In the next visit, your veneers will be attached to your teeth.

The prep time for Lumineers is comparatively less as there is practically no tooth preparation involved. Your dentist will directly take an impression, based on which your lumineers will be created in the lab and fixed in the subsequent appointment.

    The Final Note

Because Lumineers require less prep, they require patients to have better alignment, to begin with. Both veneers and Lumineers are cosmetic procedures that aim at providing you with a confident and sparkling smile.
