Hello All, today we are going to look at the problems associated with Low Testosterone and Treatments that are available if you suffer from this condition.

Testosterone is made by the body in both males and females. The testicles make testosterone in men. The ovaries in women also make testosterone but in much smaller amounts.  Although, generally testosterone is the dominant hormone in Men as Oestrogen is in Women.

The trouble with Low Testosterone for Men is not only that it can make it difficult to produce Children but worse still it can affect how the body actually grows and functions.  It actually becomes more common for men as they get older.

For women, although not as much testosterone is needed as men at a fundamental level it is still required.  Osteoporosis for example can be a knock-on effect of lower than needed levels of testosterone for both sexes.  Also, women can develop problems with the adrenal glands.

One such condition that can be caused by this is Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder HSDD.  I guess I don’t need to tell you what that means ? but anyway for this post I will mostly be focusing on what low testosterone means for men.

Low Testosterone and Treatments
for Male Fertility and Growth Disorders

Here is a quick summary of the contents :

  1. What is Testosterone and What Does it Do?
  2. What Are the Signs of Low Testosterone Levels
  3. What Causes Low Testosterone Levels
  4. Low Testosterone and Treatments
  5. My Final thoughts

1.)  What is Testosterone and What Does it Do?

Testosterone is a hormone naturally produced by the body.  It is the primary male sex hormone.  In men, testosterone plays a key role in the development of male reproductive tissues such as the testes and the prostate.  It’s also responsible for hair growth, bone density and muscle mass. (1)

2.) What Are the Signs of Low Testosterone Levels

  1. Hair Loss can occur. If Testosterone levels are low this can affect several bodily functions, including the production of body hair. (2)
  2. Fatigue:  Even if you get lots of sleep you can still feel fatigued if the testosterone levels in your body are lower than normal. (3)
  3. Erectile Disfunction:  Testosterone stimulates a man’s sex drive.  It also helps to achieve and maintain an erection.  Testosterone alone does not cause an erection, but it does stimulate the receptors in the brain to produce nitric oxide.  Nitric oxide is a molecule that helps trigger a series of chemical reactions necessary for an erection to occur. When testosterone levels are too low, a male may suffer from Erectile Dysfunction. (4)
  4. Low Sex Drive:  Testosterone plays a key role in sex drive in men.  Some men may experience a lower sex drive as they get older.  However, someone with low testosterone levels will be more likely to experience a more drastic drop in their desire to have sex all together. (5)
  5. Low Sperm Count: Testosterone plays a huge role in the production of semen.  Men with low Testosterone problems can often also have low sperm count. (6)
  6. Smaller Testicles:  Low testosterone levels in the body can contribute to smaller-than-average sized testicles. The body requires testosterone to develop the penis and testicles, low levels could contribute to a smaller penis or testicles compared to men with normal testosterone levels. (7)
  7. Changes in your Moods:  Men with low Testosterone levels often can experience changes in mood.  This is because testosterone influences many physical processes in the body.  It can also influence your mood and mental capacity.  Research suggests that men with low testosterone are more likely to suffer from depression or a lack of focus as well as being very irritable. (8)

3.) What Causes Low Testosterone Levels

Some people are born with conditions that cause Testosterone Deficiency :

  • Klinefelter syndrome
  • Ambiguous genitalia (this is when the sex organs develop in a way that is not normally looking)
  • Noonan syndrome

Some men can develop Low-Testosterone because of other health problems :

  • Pituitary gland disease leading to a hormone deficiency
  • Having the testicles removed due to cancer
  • Chemotherapy or radiation treatments
  • Autoimmune diseases ( when the body makes antibodies that attack its own cells)
  • Infections
  • Damage caused to the testicles after an accident

Many men who develop Testosterone Deficiencies have Lower levels that can be associated with :

  • Being overweight/obesity
  • Getting older usually over 40.
  • Metabolic syndrome conditions such as hypertension, unhealthy cholesterol levels, and stomach fat.
  • The Use of medications such as antidepressants and narcotic pain medications can also be a factor.

Other health problems also associated with low testosterone levels are :

  • HIV (about 3 in 10 can experience it)
  • AIDS (about 5 in 10 ) (9)

4.)  Low Testosterone and Treatments

If a man in his 20’s or 30’s suffers from low testosterone levels he may have a problem With trying to get pregnant, gonadotropin injections may be an answer in certain cases. These are hormones that signal to the body to produce more testosterone. This could increase the sperm count.

Another way is to use implantable testosterone pellets, this is a new form of treatment in which several pellets are placed under the skin of the buttocks, they then release testosterone over the course of about three to four months.

Injections and nasal gels can be used for some men. (10)

Skin patch. A patch is applied to the skin every 24 hours, in the evening, and releases small amounts of the hormone into the skin. (11)

Many people prefer to use supplements as opposed to over-the-counter or prescription medications.

Low Testosterone and Treatments Available?

My Final Thoughts

Low levels of Testosterone can occur in men of any age, it has been reported by men in their early 20’s, although it is much more common in men who are much older.

Men quite often find they have an issue because they can’t get their partner pregnant, this sparks a series of tests to be carried out on both people. A blood test is carried out on the male usually early in the morning because this is when the results are most accurate for testosterone levels.

Once your levels start to drop the process can continue slowly downwards until you address the problem by consulting with your Doctor.

Losing weight and taking exercise regularly can also help you to boost the levels of testosterone in your body.

As you have read above many health problems can cause your testosterone levels to fall.

  4. Hey,

This is a really informative and important post. I really believe that a lot of people from around the world will benefit from your article and your site. When it comes to hair loss, for myself I have lost my hair but so too have my dad and my brothers. So, I’m hoping it doesn’t have anything to do with a lack of testosterone 🙂

There are a few symptoms that have also happened to me that I won’t mention. But, reading your article really has opened my eyes to if any of these symptoms happen again.

Thank you for sharing and keep up the amazing work.

    All the best,

    Tom
